Automatic license plate cameras log everyday drives through Thompson's Station: school pickup, church, the grocery store, soccer practice. The Williamson County Sheriff's Office installed and operates most of them. The town operates a smaller set and has permitted county installs. Authorities still refuse to inform citizens how many cameras there are, where they are located, who searches, or why. That is warrantless surveillance, and it is a lack of accountability.
Why Neighbors Should Care
Parents are trying to get kids to school on time. Plate readers can turn those ordinary drives into a searchable timeline, without a warrant, and often without a public record of the search.
Plate readers photograph vehicles that pass, not only cars tied to a crime. That includes school pickup, carpools, grandparents, and teens learning to drive. These cameras are not a school system. They sit on roads families already use.
Local reads can feed a wider lookup network. ACLU reporting describes searches by agencies far from the camera, including searches tied to immigration and other matters a town never voted on.
A safety tool without a public audit is not accountability. Residents still cannot see who searched local plate data, how often, or for what reason. The Sheriff's Office denied those logs.
What Flock Does
Flock Safety sells automatic license plate reader (ALPR) cameras, often a pole-mounted unit with a solar panel, that capture plate numbers and vehicle details as cars pass. Agencies can search those reads, set alert lists, and use broader networks.

The Town of Thompson's Station posted a Flock Safety order form (TN - Thompson's Station) with its October 2023 meeting materials. The form lists 4 Falcon cameras, a 60-month term, and 30-day retention. Year 1 is $10,450. The annual amount is $10,000. The contract total is $50,450. The signature and date fields on the posted PDF are blank, so the exact execution date and install date are unknown. The form says the term begins at first installation and validation. That start date is not on this PDF.

The Williamson County Commission approved license plate readers on state highway right-of-ways. The Sheriff's Office stated that six Flock cameras were already deployed countywide and that it had sought additional Vigilant cameras through a grant.

Regular Board of Mayor and Aldermen meetings are scheduled for the 2nd Tuesday of each month (except December) at 6:00 p.m. at Town Hall.
Ask the Williamson County Sheriff's Office how many cameras there are, who can search them, whether audit logs can be reviewed, and whether more are planned. Write through the office's public records process.
